Remembering Isaac
by
Ben Behinun
With just two weeks left of his senior year at Hudson University, Jake Kimball, answers a classified ad in Ceramics Monthly magazine. The recent death of Isaac Bingham, the seventh generation potter in Niederbipp, an old Quaker town in western Pennsylvania, has created the opportunity Jake has only dared to dream about. He applies for the position and after an interview with the dead man's friends and trustees; he is awarded the shop, home and extensive pottery collection.
As Jake begins his work in the studio, he becomes aware of another collection; a large eclectic set of mugs hanging from an overhead beam. As time passes, he learns the significance of these mugs as the old potter's friends begin to drop by for a cup of tea and to share the lessons they learned from him. With the help of his new friend and fellow artist, Amy, Jake begins to unravel the mysteries of the man he has come to replace and the secrets of life he understood and shared.
Remembering Isaac is a series of tales within a tale that explore the complexities of human nature, our need to connect, and the yearning we all have for love, hope, truth, purpose and joy.
Val has several copies of the book that are being shared with the group. Call her if you would like to borrow a copy.
